Gimp – Tool for Artists No. 1

Want to use the pen tool but can’t afford to buy Photoshop? Or is Photoshop Elements just not working for you? Then maybe Gimp is the program you’re looking for.

Gimp is an image manipulation program that is free and available for download to Windows, Mac, Linux, and a few other systems.

So why else should you download it?

Here are a few reasons:

  • The pen tool – great for straight lines and curves of all thicknesses. Unfortunately, Photoshop Elements does not carry this tool. If you’re a dedicated user to this tool but don’t always have access to Photoshop, then Gimp is the free alternative for you.
  • Touch up your photos – Gimp contains tools such as the clone tool, the healing tool, and the perspective clone tool. Easily cover up those smudges or unwanted objects in all your photos.
  • File formats – the program allows you to import all the common file formats including jpgs, gifs, pngs, etc. and export them, too. Don’t hassle with complicated file conversion when Gimp does it for you hassle free.
  • User Manuals – although you have to download them separately, they’re available in 13+ different languages. English not your first language? No problem. Download the manual in whatever language you feel comfortable in.

Below is a picture of the interface for Windows. Clear, simple, and modern, isn’t it?

Need some more reasons? The Gimp website also offers Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert Tutorials, along with tutorials for certain purposes such as photo editing, web, and script authoring. If reading books on the program is more your thing, there are plenty of Gimp books listed on their web site.

So why not download Gimp? It’s free and ready for you to use. I use it for all my art needs. Why don’t you? Download Gimp here.
